AWE–RRANZ CIMS Recovery Scholarship

AWE and Response & Recovery Aotearoa New Zealand (RRANZ) are thrilled to offer a new scholarship for an AWE NZ member to attend the Performing the CIMS Recovery Function course in Wellington this October. This course is built with subject matter experts and designed for people working in local authorities, agencies, and organisations where recovery may land on your desk.

When disaster strikes, the decisions made in the first hours shape recovery for months, sometimes years. Yet early recovery is one of the least-trained areas in emergency management.

Performing the CIMS Recovery Function is a two-day, hands-on course designed to change that.

Participants will leave with the confidence and practical capability to:

• Step into an early recovery role from Day 1
• Coordinate across agencies and the four environments of recovery
• Support communities and your own team through the toughest phase

The scholarship covers full course registration plus a $500 travel allowance.

This scholarship is suited to a New Zealand-based AWE member who will operate as part of the recovery function within New Zealand’s Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS) and take on responsibilities for achieving effective outcomes for local community recovery.

Selection criteria

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

• Eligibility and context
  Applicants must be current AWE members and based in New Zealand, with involvement in emergency management or recovery activities operating within New Zealand’s Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS).
• Recovery role or pathway
  Applicants should be currently working in a recovery role, or able to demonstrate a clear pathway to taking on recovery responsibilities in future emergency responses.
• Relevance of the course
  Applicants should explain how the Performing the CIMS Recovery Function course aligns with their role, responsibilities, or professional development goals in recovery.
• Application of learning
  Applicants should outline how they intend to apply the knowledge and skills gained from the course within their organisation, community, or region to support effective recovery outcomes.
• Commitment to recovery practice
  Applicants should demonstrate a genuine interest in recovery work and a commitment to building recovery capability within the emergency management sector.

The scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who best demonstrates alignment with recovery practice under CIMS and the potential to apply course learning to strengthen community recovery outcomes in New Zealand.
