Ruth Wraith OAM announced the winners of the 2026 AWE Recognition Awards at the Awards Ceremony on 15 September 2026.
Nominees for this year’s Awards play a wide range of roles and come from a range of different organisations across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. Collectively these women paint a picture of emergency management and disaster resilience across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific – one where everybody has an important role to play, from leaders and front-line responders to technical experts, researchers, trainers and volunteers.

Leadership
For a woman whose vision, influence and example has shaped the future of emergency management and disaster resilience.

Michelle is an outstanding scholar and advocate whose work has transformed disability-inclusive emergency management in Australia and internationally. As Deputy Director of the University of Sydney’s Centre for Disability Research and Policy and an ARC Fellow, she led major research, policy, and practice initiatives, including Collaborating4Inclusion, P-CEP, and the nationally recognised DIEM Toolkit. Michelle’s ability to unite disability, health, community, and emergency services has strengthened preparedness, response, and recovery for people with disabilities. Her leadership, impact, and commitment to inclusive disaster risk reduction make her a highly deserving recipient of recognition.
